THE MATAURA ELECTION.
MR E. H'NAB ELECTED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Gore, May 26. The Mataura election to-day was keeuly contested, though the voting was not so h^avy as at the general election. Tha following are .the roi.ulc3: —
Majority for Mr M'Nab ... There were 14 informal votes. Mr M'Nab briefly addressed the electors when his return was assured, thanking those who had returned him at the head of the poll. I At the general election in December, 1896. the I voting was : Richardson 2054-, M'Nab 1850. At ' the general election in 1893 the voting was : j M'Nab 1417, Richardson 1300, Christie 364. I 16 will be seen from the figures for 1896 thab Mr M'Nftb has only improved his position by 44 votes. It is evident, therefore, that fully 500 electors who supported Mr Richardson in 1896 refrained from going to the poll on Thursday.
The chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board afc the last meeting mentioned as a notable fitot the departure from the port of the a.s. Waimate for London, drawing 27ft 9in.
