Notes from Lyell

(PnoM Our Own Correspondent.) Lyell, May 27.

Alpine. — Tbe mine manager reports :— " The total length of the main south level is now 42(fft. There is about a foot of solid stone in the foot.wall which carries a little gold, but tbe remainder of the face consists of broken slate and quartz bowlders. ,In the lower stopes the reef is 7ft wide, while the quality of the stone remains unchanged; In the upper &topes the reef is becoming smaller as we rise, but a slight improvement in the quality of stone is noticeable. The crosscut from •the top stopes into the footwall has been temporarily suspended as the wjork proves inconvenient while operations are progressing in the stopes above. In the 125 ft .level the connection has been made with the main shaft. We are now engaged in laying rails and cleaning out t the Itivel preparatory to starting the extension" of the levels south. The crosscut to the west at Nb. 4 level here has been extended a distance of 20ft, making the total length of crosscut 60ft. The country pusscd through is easy driving. During the week 212 lons of stone have been sent" to the battery. The following is the result of scraping the top plates at the battery :— 147J0z of amalgam froru 216 tons of stone treated."
