SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The ordinary meeting, held on Friday, May 27, was attended by the Commissioner '(Mr D. Barron) and Messrs A. Kinioss, D. King, and A. Baldey. Hugh Sutherland's section 11, block 11, Lillbuvn. wa3 forfeited. Klizaoatb. Browne applied to purchase Toi-Tois Island in Matsura River. — To be offered on grazing license at 10d per annum. 'he TJnder-aecretary of Lands wrote re proposal to sell islands in Matauva, River that such islands should be reserved for recreation purposes and assent to sale should be withheld in mean* time. — Government to be informed that the islands referred to, except that applied for by John Spratt, were not objects of beauty and were a nuisance to settler*, being covered with weeds and infested with rabbits. J. Snralt's will be. reserved. For illegal cutting on Crown lands adjoining sawmill areas 200 and 378, Longwood, and sawmill area 361, Winton forest, it was decided that the New Zealand Pine Company be charged £40 and £11 15s respectively for the trespasses. Re Stewart Island County Council's proposals for expenditure of "thirds" accrued to January 31, 1898, the receiver wa3 authorised to pay uvor. the amount (£5 7s 7d).

Mr Russell (for Anderson and Hiiper) And Edward Pay applied as to the valuation on section 10, block XXI If, Invercargill Hundred.-Both parties decided to accept the ranger's valuation. In connection with the same block it was decided that the ungelected. sections be withdrawn from ■application until the sawmilling timber applied for by Anderson and Harper is cut.

The chairman Limehills Domain Board requestad that sections 1 and 8, block IV, Limehills, be added to the recreation reserve. — Kesolved that section 1 be reserved for recreation purposes : application to be made to school committee for section 8. - Mr William Russell Cfor William Colquhouti) objected to section 49, block IV, Winton Hundred, bains made a site for a sheep dip. — Informed that board, cannot -alter its decision.

Henvy Temple ton applied to surrender part of section 7, block XIV. Oleramika, and to retain about 150 acrsa, as the rest of the section wrs useless peat moss.— Declined. »

W. H. Brown applied for refund of survey fie -paid on section 336, Forest Hall. — To be credited with the amount. P.. S. M'Kay applied to change bis holding to a lease in perpetuity. Rsferrod to SurveyorGeneral f or interpretation of section 160, "Land Act-, 1892." John Spowavt applied for a, lease of sections 'n block 111, Loehiel township.— Resolved that the block be offered at auction at £1 per anunm for 30 years. The ranger recommended, the leasing of sec* n12, block I, Aparima, to A. R. Hare for Ji me burning purposes, and suggested that the value of the limekiln erected by W. H Smith be arranged between the parties.— Section to be offered at auction for seven years at £115s per acre, parties to anange as to price of kiln, and section to be burdened accordingly. William Cusaen offered £5 for sleeper timber on section 58 t,nd 59, block V, Longviood.— Declined.

James Gibbs applied for spotion 10, block XV, Campbelltown.— Applicant to satisfy board as to his means and bona fides. Sarah Ward applied for section 14, block VIII, Losgwcod village. — Mr Macalister (for Thomas Watson) objected, aud put iv an application — Held ooaro TarT 'ar till next meeting ; Miss Ward to be called on to appear. Felix Lngue wan granted section 735, Centre Bush village, and Richard B. Treloar section 58, I block VIII, Campbelltown Hundred. Arthur Perkins applied for section 31; block 111, Chatton.— Adjourned till next meeting for members to visit the land, the warden to be notified that Perkins withdraws his objection to O'Donnell's application and that Pacey has not appealed before the board or paid back rants or fees as undertaken by him.

T. G. Pearce asked the board's consent to the transfer to him and his daughter of sections 1 and. 2, Obahu Estate, held by M. and J. Smith.— Minister for Lands to be asked to recommend transfer.

Wm. Ruraell wrote re reduction of price of sections in the town of Winton from j£3o to .£2O, which he thought would be prejudicial to the interests of the to vyn.— Resolved that the previous resolution be rescinded ; all sections west of Durham street to ue sold at £20 and all those east of lb.Atsitreetat.fl32.

The executors of the late Win. Stevens stated that a l?an-to and hut were removed from section 6, Beaumont, 'under & misapprehension, aad it would cost mots to replace them than they were worth. —Value of buildings to be demanded.*

The ranger reported that he Had taken possession of scation 6, block VII, Makarewa, held by Margaret Waldi on. --Action approved of and land to be re-openec' ; no valuation for improvements. He had also taken possession of section 62, Wanaki, held by Gavin Brighton.— To be reopened, burdeued with valuation for improvements.
