A NEW PATENT.

Mr James Shepherd, engineer, of InvercargilJ, has invented an ingenious contrivance, which may be used in connection with locomotive, traction, or portable engines, for arresting sparks, consuming smoke, and returning heat. "The invention consists of a Felton wheel which is contained In the smoke-box and driven by fcie exhsueS eresm. The wheel drives two fans attached to the outside of the smoke-box, into which tha sparfrs are drawn by the action of the fans. From the smoke-box the sparks are then carried by pipes to the funnel of the engine, where they are met by the condensed steam and extinguished. A trial has already been made of the invention in connection with a portable engine, and is said to have proved a thorough success. The invention has been taken up by a few influential men is Invercargil], and patents have been applied for in New Zealand, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Canada, the United States, Great Britain, France, sud Germany. The Chief Engineer of Railways has also seen the con* trtvance and thinks highly of it, and- the Bail* way department has granted the use of a locomotive for the purpose of a trial.
