Chess Match.
The match between the Otago and Oamaru Chess Clubs was begun on Saturday evening at 7.30 and continued till 11 o'clock, when it was adjourned to Saturday nexb. Very good progress •was made, as will be seen by the subjoined table :— No. of
The Otago Club had the move at boards 1, 3, 5, <fee. Most of the games are pretty even, the play bavins been more careful than brilliant. Mr H. J. Cleland, unfortunately, has lost the exchange and a pawn, but against this has to be set a piece gained by Mr Dawe and a pawn by Mr Hastings. All the other boards show a numerical equality of force except at board 14, where the Otago player has lost a pawn, but has some compensation in
position. The score of the game at board 4is as under :—
Nothing could be better than ths spirit in which the match has been carried on. The play has been moderately fast, and the officer in charge of the telegraph had his time fully occupied, but, needless to say, did his part in a way that could not be excelled.
