NORTHERN FOOTLIGHT FLASHES.

By Svenguj.

Auckland, May 3. Dear Pasq,uin\— The Greenwoods gave a performance in aid of the Hawke's Bay floods at tho Opera House this week, and Bernard's Circus, at the Agricultural, are following suit by donating £'S 0a 4d towards 'the fund. Mr P. K. Dix also arranged a conceit in aid of the disaster, but it was poorly patronised. The Monday "pops" are still drawing big houses at the City Hall. Mr F. A. Clark is a j new x^erformer this week. The Gladys Leigh Comedy Company, under the management of Mr P. R. Dix, open at the Opera House on the sth inst. for a three nights' season in "Dream Faces" and Hoyt's farcical comedy "The Coming Woman." They will bs assisted by Mr L. Leonard Colling, Mr Manville Fort, Misses Hettie Howard, Louise Aylett, and Lily Thomson. Bernard's Circus, at the Agricultural Hall, is a poor one. They conclude their season on Tuesday night, and moat likely will leave for Fiji next day. The circus will no doubt be better appreciated by the South Sea islanders than by Maorilanders. At the City Hall Crawford and Moore's show had a good crowd present last Saturday night. Mi&s Gertrude Emery made her first appearancu iv a contortion act, and later on in a skippingrope dance, fcihe is only an ordinal y pei former. The company has nothiDg new. the scenery being old and aliuo3t everything else the same. The City Kail ia in an awfully dirty state, and needs looking after very badly. 'Ihe Original Banjo, Mandolin, and Guitar Club will give two concerts at the Opera House on the 17th and 18th inbt., 50 per cent, of the proceeds to ba given in aid of the Hawke's Bay disaster. Mr A. A. Partridge is manager of this club. Mr John Fuller, now of your city, was a graat favourite during his long stay in Auckland. The Auckland Comic Opera Company stags "Princess Ida" on the 19th for a. season of hix nights. Herr Veunermark is sctnic aitisb, Archdale Tayler atage manager, Carl Sehrnitfc musical director, and Charles Chambers business manager. The Marist Brothers Dramatic Company appeared at the Opera House on Monday before a packed audience. The show was "poiaonious" Another x^erformance was given on the following night in aid of the Hawke's Bay disaster. Bryant's Comedy Company are doing very fair biz. round the country districts. Mr John Birch (singer) was married recently. A hi/sh-kicking conteat took place between Jim Mooney and " Lucifer" for £10 aside and a trophy at "Ye Olde Englishe Fayre," Perth. " Lucitur " w0.3 the victor in all three styles of kicking. The. winner was not so well as he could have wLshcil," whilst Mooney was nervous and did not kick in his customary manner, failing even to reuch the tambourine iv his own style of kick " Lucifer kicked 9ft l^in— a few inches short of his record. Professor Bristol's trained horses arc id good condition at present. They appear next Saturday night. One of the horses will be anything but a favourite with prohibitionists, as he drinks beer, chews tobacco, smokes a pipe, and was once arrested for being drunk and disorderly in the Stat s. A drunken man is odious, but a drunken animal must be an abomination. Dick Hayes was tendered a benefit by Bernard's Ciicus on the 4th, Charlie Hugo appearing as clown, Connor Brothers also assisting.
