BURNING PLAINS.

April 12.— 0n Saturday a very heavy N.W. gale commenced blowing over the downs, and ebeaves and straw from stacks were flying in every direction, in most instances stacks of grain in bags being stripped of all covering. Fire.— During the height of the storm a dis,a»trous fire took place at Mr E. Clements':*, whereby a mill ani chaff cutter were burnt to the ground, also part of a .sheaf stick holding about an hour's threshing, all thestraw, ai, d Mr Clernents's winter supply of chaff. The mill and chaffeutter belonged to Mr C. Cooper, well known in the district. So far as can be learned there is no insurance on either stacks or plant, so the loss will be heavy in each cass. They had been threshing during the morning, but had knocked off for dinner and on account of the wind. All hands were about the mill when the fire broke out, but the blaze spread with such rapidity that nothing could ba Bayed. The origin was mo3t likely a Bpark»

which, fanned by the strong hot wind, caught the chaff or straw. No blame appears Attachable to anyone, as every precaution was taken, nil doors being shut and dampers down, so that the loss is felt the more keenty. Much sympathy is felt, for both parties involved.
