WAIKAIA.
1 February 8.--lbe weather during the past week has been very changeable, light showers and uonie very heavy winds having been experienced. The showers have madq a great difference in the look of the turnip crops. Harvesting has commenced in a few places, and I believe it will be pretty general next we<;k. ( 'ropß on the low ground and river flats are looking fairly well, and in aomti instances they ore very jjood, but the hill ciops ate as ». rule very poor. School. — Our school opened to-day, the attendnnce being very good There has been an addition made to the school during the holidays. Mr Birso, of Invercargill, was tb* contractor, and he has made a very eooA job of it.. I see one of our !>oys, James Robertson, was the highest of 27 country candidates, and one of the girls, Gertrude Taylor, Ava* 6th, that being the highett of the girls, facts which rpeak very highly for our t-acher, Mr Hutchineon. Sporting.— Our hnck races come off on Friday, and I believe if the weather permits there will be «i tfood day* wort. A concert and bull will be held in Bell's Hall in the evening fnr the benefit of our brass baud, the members of which are im- [ proving very much of late. !
