At a meeting of the La Mascotte Company the. | directors were authorised to dispose of the pro« j i>erty. i An application of an unusual nature came i before the Warden's Court at the Thames to-day, j being the tirst made under the amended Mining ( Act of last year. Herbert Gordon, miner, of the i Thames, applied for a license under the Mining Act Amendment Act of 1896 for the right to proßpect $8,000 acres at Tairua. known as the Tairua blocks IV, .XII, and XIIL Whitianga Survey District, and I, 11, and VI, Tairua Survey District The land was described as Crown land occupied by the Kauri Timber Company on lease or license, mid a p^specting license was applied for to exist over a psriod of one year.- - The Kauri Timber Company -objected. After hearing the evidence and legal argument the warden granted the application conditionally, and limited the area 'to 201)0 acres. This is the first prospecting license tinder the act- of 189(5 granted on the the Hauraki Goldnelds. MOUNT LYELL MINING AND RAILWAY COMPANY (LIMITED). The following cablegram came to hand last j evening :—": — " The metallurgist reports : Bessemer i converters running 12 huuiv* in the 24 hours. The plant and machinery, together with theconverter matte, give great gratification." Mr A. G. Fenwick "supplies the following extracts from the head office report for the week ending December 31 :— Smelting Plant. —No. 2 blast- furnace blown in again ; both furnaces running. Extension of Smelting Plant.— Ore storage pit in progress, also excavation for extension of blower room ; No. 5 Iloot'n blower set up ; erecting posts of tapping floor of extended building. Conglomerate Creek "Water Supply.— Race and fluming neariog completion. Converter Plant. — Converters: First new top for vt ssels received and in place ; elevator about j completed ; entire plant practically finished and j ready for continuous wffrk : running electric light wires through building. I The following smelting results have been j received by cable :— From the 17th December to I the 14th January inclusive a total quantity of about 3877 tonsef ore have bean treated, resulting | in a total approximate weight of 322 tonß of con- I verter matte, rontahiing — Copper, 172 tons; I silver, WJOloz; gold, 6820z. The average assay value of the ore before treatment was— Copper, 517 per cent. ; silver, 2 740 a per ton ; gold, "207 do. Owing to repairs th« furnaces could" not be worked full "time, the run for the month being equal to 38 days for one furnace. Mr A. G. Fenwick hands us the following information regarding the return published in our yesterday's issue :— " Computing the value of copper at £4Q per ton, 6ilver and gold at 2s fid and £4 per ounce respectively, the results give, j after deducting 32s par ton as charges, an approximate net profit of £1 }2s per ton of ore treated." j Mr Fenwick has received the following explanation regarding the December returns :—": — " Owing to some misunderstanding at the works the November return was overstated through the inclusion of some of the matte for the December run, but this is corrected by the aggregate figures of the two months' returns, November and December being taken together, the excess shown in the recoveries for the former month's run reducing the apparent less for December."
