THE BRADY TRAGEDY.
A CONFESSION OF MURDER. Melbourne, January 20. . There was a sensational development to- < day in connection with the Brady tragedy, when Phillips made a lengthy statement confessing the murder. He Bays he met; Brady by~ appointment to discuss the repayment of embezzled money, and admitted ' takingaponnd. Brady acccasd him of stealing L2O, and demanded an immediate refund, otherwise he would place the matter in the hands of the police. Fearful of being sent to prison, and etuog by offensive threats, Phillips ■ I drew a revolver, bought for his brother, and ! shot-Brady in, the head. Ho then ran to.the J street door, and heard Brady following, : Desperate at what he had already done he. - ' returned add again fired at Brady, who fell. ! As tie was in fall view of the street Phillipß ! dragged him farther in. The wounded man was breathing, and Phillips, apprehensive he wonld revive, cut his throat. He denies that he had any premeditation of the crime up to tbe time he fired the first shot. He bad tbe greatest friendship and admiration for Brady, under whose influence, he alleges, he was led into, a vicious, extravagant life. Jan nary 22. In connection with the confession made by Phillips, the murderer of Brady, the police consider that Phillips baa greatly exaggerated the defects in Brady's moral character. '
