In next issue will appear some of the games in which Mr Mellor took part. It is difficult to speak with confidence of the merits of the play as compared with that in ! former congress tourneys, but the impression the I games sive is that there i 3 a distinct advance, i t Most of the g*mes indicate harvl »tudy by the players, and the latest variations from Leipzig, Nuremberg, and Moscow have not escaped their notice The influence of Mr Mason's books and of Mr Lask«r's book is distinctly traceable to some of the games. This shows that the players take a sufficient interest in the g.iine to make it a subject of study. But notwithstanding the considerable amount of " book " in evidence there is ample evidence also of original work, and some of the positions evolved are both interesting and remarkable. The games seem to compare very favourably with those of amateurs in the other colonies, and even with those of Europe and America. j Mr R. J. Barnes is at present on a visit to Dunedin, whera he has been welcomed and congratulated by the local players. Had the intercolonial congress at Warrnambod been fixed to begin a, wenk later, ha might have besn able to attend it as the representative of New Zealand, but when i ' the New Zealand Congress closed there was not ' sufficient time left to reach Warrnambod before I the date fixed for the beginning of the tourna- j ruent.
