WAIKAKA VALLEY.

Draining and various .other farm work are occupying the time of others | who Have got the carting fiuished. A great deal of oats has bean carted away during the month, but the work will occupy some time longer. Most of tho oats is being stored in Messrs Tothill, Wat»on, and Co.'s large store at the aiding. The majority intend to hold for some time, unless the price should soon reach 23 per bushel. As oats at Is 3d per bushel are considered a payable crop in a district such as this, where the average yield must | be about 45 bushels per acre, it is clear that at 2s most of us would in a few years become " social pests." But since a year of good prices comes only at long intervals, the high price occasionally received only partly makes up for the years of ,low prices. - I

Turnips.— This important crop is not all that could be desired, the cause being principally due to the unfavourable season, but as * large number of sheep (principally- lam ba) were sold fat this season, there is fro doubt but that there wifl be plenty of winter feed for the rest of the stock. Relisious.— Last week a convention of Christian endeavour societies was held in the local Presbyterian Church. Papers were read by Messrs \R. Byars (Knapdale), J. Kd«r«r (Tapanui), J. Bagrie (Waipahi), and Misa K. Gilchriut (Waikaka Valley). M-Illi gworth (Wyndham) sent a paper, which was raad by the president. The president (Rev. G. Miller) towards the conclusion of the proceedings complimented the writers, and. mentioned some of the advantages which members of thwejaooieties enjoyed.
