May 2. — After a very protracted harvest, owing in most cases to late sowing and to backward weather during spring and summer, the grain in this district has been all secured at laßt, and threshing and chaffcutting, when the weather will permit, is going on all round. School Matters. The annual meeting of householders, held in the schoolroom last Monday night for tbe purpose of electing a committee for the ensuing year, was very sparsely attended, only one or two besides the committee putting in an appearance. The following gentlemen .were elected : Messrs Robert Smith (chairman), John G Shearer (secretary and treasurer), Charles Affleck, Robert Baird, Timothy Weehau, William Johnstone, and John Calder Phrenology. -Mr O. K. Hugo, the phrenologist, gave a lecture last night in ihe schoolroom to a very small audience. The lecture, however, was much enjojed by those who ventured out on a somewhat rough night. None of those present wanted charts. Perhaps the description of the characteristics of the late Deeming and other notables made them chary of being enlightened as to what evil propensities were enclosed in their craniums.

- May S. — A'ineeting of householders was held on tbe 27th nit. in the pchoolhoute here for the purpose ■ f et-cting a school committee for the ensuing year. There was a good attendance, and much interest was manifested in the proceedings. Seven householders were nominated for five vacancies, and the election resulted as follows :— A. Drake 18, J. Fox 16, D. Urqubarfc 15. D. M'Lean 15, J. Cayford 11, P. Muir 11, and J. D. 6TLenr>an 6. The first five were accordingly declared elected.
