TAX ON COMMERCIALS.

■ ♦ Melbourne, May 4. Mr Turner, the Premier, has received a reply from the Hon. J. G. Ward with reference to the tax on Victorian commercial travellers in New Zealand. Mr Ward says he is unable to agree with the statement that the tax seriously affects the trade of Victorian merchants in New Zealand, and auks Mr Turner to consider the effort; that the exemption of non-resident traders in New Zealand would have upon local merchants who are subjeot to tha income tax. He adds that the tax was imposed in consequence of the difficulty experienced by representatives of non -resident merchants in making a return of business done and tha profits arising therefrom. He has carefully watched the effect of the tax, and heard many representations on the matter, but *b present he regrets to say that he does aofc consider it advisable to make any aleration.
