PRESENTATION.

About 200 of the residents of the Highcliff district wei e entertained at asocialgatkeringon Wednesday night,- 29th ult., by Mr aud Mrs O. J. Hodge prior to tbe latter's departure from the locality. Advantage was taken of the occasion to present the host and hostess with a beautiful silver teapot, with its spirit stand, the presentation being made by Mr A. Stuart, chairman of the School Committee, while complimentary speeches to Mr and Mrs Hodge were also made by the Rev. A Greig and Mr J. White. The gift bore the following inscription :—" Presented to Mr and Mrs O. J, Hodge," by the residents and pupils of Highcliff, as a mark of respect. April 1896." In reply, Mr Hodge heartily thanked the donors for the present they bad given to him, and expressed the gratitude which both Mrs Hodge and himself felt towards the residents of the district for the kindness thi-y had at all times received from everyone. Duriug the evening the following programme was ?erfor.raed :— Chorus by children, " All love ack " ; vocal aolo. Miss Hall ; vocal solo, Miss Corbett' 1 , recitation, Miss Maggie Fairbairn ; vocal solo, Miss M Hall; chorus by children, "Climbing to the Golden Gate" : vocal solo, Miss Polly Hall ; vocal duet, "Tho old Kentucky home," Misses Mathy-son ; chorus by children, "Poor old Joe" ; Highla d fling, MUs Tottie Hall. The performers were loudly applauded for tlmr efforts. Miss Fitzgerald and Miss Walden played the accompaniments during tha evening, and a vote of thanks was accorded them for their services.
