Did His Best.
There has been many a warrior famous for his soldierly skill and intrepidity in the field who, when called upon to make a speech, has found himself completely non-plucsed.
A Btorv is going the rounds as to an old Indian officer who, at a recent dinner, had to propose the toast of the —th regiment. He made a rambling, two-minute speech, and concluded as follows :—: —
" Here's to the gallant — th regiment, the last to reach the 'field, and the first to leave it!"
He sat down amid a shoat of laughter, and then &c-e'mg bis mistake, strove to rectify it. '• Gt-Dtleuieo," he said, "you must forgive me for the slip I have just made. The toaat I wished to propose was : ' Here's to the gallant — th regiment, equal to none ! " There was another burst of laughter, find the grizzled hero of a hundred fights rose for a third time to try to put matters straight; but his words were lost in the noise and merriment, and the toast was honoured as he had proposed it.
