Otago Chess Club Championship Tourney.
Game between, Messrs 11 A. Cleland and J. B. Borton.
(a) 10 P-Q 5 would have cramped Blacks game terribly. (6) As this Xt has to retire again immediately this is a lost move. White had probably in contemplation Xt x B P ; and if k x kt, B-B 4 eh. White would regain the pieca, but would gain nothing mora and probably lose a P. (c) Not very goo I, but one of those moves which a pi iyer is tempted to make when lie sees nothing pu-ticii'arly tempting to do. B-Q 3, PB 3, or B-K 2 are all preferable to the text move. Aa one result of it White loses a P at the l!)th move. (tf) Black having gained one pawn might have ventured 20 bx p eh. He would probably have gained a third pawn for this piece with a good game. For example : £0 b x p eh ; 21 Xt x B, kt-r 5 eh ; 22 K-B 1, r-q 3 ; 23 Q-Q 82, q-kt 3 ; 24 Kt-Q 3, q x p. (c) An error, which endß in losing the game. "22 b-k b 3 would make all secure. (/) An oversight. 'He could have won at least the exchange by 27 b-k r 5 Obviously if 2S Q x Xt, kt kt 6 mate 3. After the text move Black's game is hopeless. The game was continued for 20 more moves, and won by White.
