TRADE WITH MANCHESTER.
A NEW LINE OF STEAMERS.
London, June 22.
The correspondent of the Manchester Guardian states that London influences militate against the efforts to open a direct trade for colonial produce between Manchester and Australia. A wealthy firm is prepared to build necessary steamers for the trade, and accept part payment in shares ; the vessels to touch at Capetown. A Manchester Colonial Steamship- Company is being formed to run produce steamers between New Zealand, Australia, Manchester, and Glasgow, calling at the Cape. The builders of the vessels are taking shares. The Manchester City News advises importers to offer equal financial facilities to London to secure opening of trade.
Drum-major Shanaghan, late of the 58th Regiment, died at Auckland on Monday. He served in the northern war in 1845. A recent traveller in Tasmania, from Melbourne, has been fined £25 and costs for taking over a suit of clothes to oblige a Melbourne tailor and his customer. The suit was ale© forfeited.
