PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED.

The Pall Mall Magazine for June ia rtally ft sumptuous number, surpassing even its own high standard in the matter of illustrations. The frontispiece as usual is well worth f faming. On this occasion ifc ia the reproduction of Descharop's picture "Out of Mischief." The opening article, " When Leaves are Green," ia exquisitely illustrated by Qiacouaelli with s number of coloured illustrations of bird life — * branch of art in which he ie unapproachable. The second number of Grant Allen's " Evolttfcidn of Early Italian At " w fall of interest, especially to those who havo never hid an opportunity of pereonally acquainting themselves with the treasures of the early painter*. The illustrations are numerous and beautiful, including one of Titian's "Mary Magdalene." In fiotion we have a very sensational story by Fergus Hume, ♦' The Turquoise Stall; " a shotb sketch by Mr Waldorf Astor ; a further instalment of " Joan Haste," by Ridir Haggard ; *nd the conclusion of the Marquis of Lome's quaint story "Quee." "Portsmouth, PAifc and Present," affords the text for an interesting avticle ; " Cavalry in the Waterloo Campaign " has reached its fourth number, and •« Lord Ohancol'or Erskine " furnishes a good subject for a menu ir. Interspersed between these heavier articles aie some daintily illustrated poems. One wishes that more millionaires would invest in magazines if this is the charming result of tuch investment. Me»era Prictor and Co. have shown us va advance copy of Sampson Low's "Annual," amthtr one to be added to the mapy illustrated publications which the Christmas season always brings forth. The , principal illuitrations are the work of French artists and lithographers, and smoog thorn is a large end beautiful coloured pUte, "The Foundling," from a well-known paiotiDg in the Luxembourg Palace. The leading story in the "Annual" is to be specially written by the au'hor of •' Lorna Doone," and is entitled •' Skin by the Doones ; a Re card of Exraoor." There are also tales by W. Clark Rmsell and S. R. Crockett. The publication gives promiM of being an excellent shilling's worth.
