DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.

(Fkom Ova Own Correspondent.) Invercaegill, Jane 24. Mr Christopher Basstian, aged 75, died at St. Luke's Hospital hero thii morning. He was one of Southland's earliest and most prominent settlers, having come with his family from Tasmania in the fifties. In the old Provincial Council days he was a member of that body, and at a later period represented a Southland constituency in Parliament, and up to the time of his death was a conspicuous member o? several local public bodies, including tho Wallace County Council (of which he was chairman last year) and the Southland Hospital Trustees. He also for many years bad ocenpied the position of president of the Inveraargill Club. He at one time occupied the Woodstock estate, neir Woodlands, aud until quite lately owned Dunrobin station. L:ke many other Btation owner*, he Buffered heavy losses through the rabbit plague, but, being a remarkably active and energetic man, battled with more or less success until quite recently against these reversals.

Mr Thomas Morris, of Dunedio, has takeu out an additional patent for his electric remedies, the latest; being intended foe family use only.
