ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the council of the Acclimatisation Society was held on Monday afternoon, and attended by Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), A. C. Stronach, G. M. Marshall, J. Sinclair-Thomson, P. F. Stoddart, T. Brown, and W. 8. Pillans. ' Mr F. Deans in his monthly report stated that the two itags presented to the society by Mr JBlackwood were liberated at Morven Hills, MMrthe other at Timaru creek, Lake Hawea. For the purpose of endeavouring to find salmon in tbe Aparima William A. W. Campbell and he made an attempt to net the river. They took a boat up to Otaufcau bj rail— a distfcuce «f about 20 miles— mi commenced to work tbe
river downwards, bat the experiment was anythirg but sttisFactory. But it must nob be concluded thf-t beer.use they failed to secure a specimen there were no salmon In the Aparima. Ho thought that if time would permit various tiinln should be made in or near tho tid-vl waters. Up to date lue nuinbjr of ova, obtained from the various kinds of htock fis'j wee as follow : — Loch Leven trcub, 70 000; Sco'ch brown trout, 99,000 ; American brook trout, 28,000 ; Euglish flalmon, 10 000 ;— total, 207,000. — Ifc was resol vpd th?.t ths Apantna liver be netted again in July with the object of ascertaining whether there is any salmon in tbe river. It was r'ecided to act in conjunction with the S*uth'nnd Society in petitioning tho Government to hniid over any aalmon ova imported to one district. The following executive were appoiated :— Mmwitb Maitlsnd, Stronacb, Begg, Cbiiholm, Ei'gar, and Brown.
