Country Sales.— Thr New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report having held their fortnightly sale by auction, on Friday, the«2lst inst., at the Crown Yards, Bnlclutha. While there was a very good attendance of both farmers and dealers present, owing doubtless to the bad state of the roads after such a heavy fall of enow the numler of both sheep and cattle to hand was somewhat disappointing, all on%red, however, were dittpo&ed of under good competition and at full prices, all things considered.—The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) report holding their usual fortnightly sale at the Crown Yards, Bilclutha, on Friday, 21at instant, but owing to the severe weather which had been experienced for some days, it was an utter impossibility to phift sheep, so that very few came forward ; but the few lots which had managed to face the snow found buyers at veiy satisfactoiy pi ices, owes Belling at Q> 4d to 'Js 2d and two-tooth tuixed c.r033breds up to Bs. A line of good forward-conditioned cattle sold at £6 per head and two-year-old.s at £3 10s. On Thursday, 20th inst., they held a clearing sile ou account of Mr A Rentie, Milton (who has lct&dd his farm). On Tuesday 25th 1 ius,t., we held a clearing sale at Cqalburn Farm, Benhiir, on account of Mr A. Morrison (owing to 1 expiration of lease). The bad weather slightly inj terfered with tbe attendance, but as those present ' were nearly all buyers everything was sold at full market value. Store Cattle.— Market quiet. Ihe very wintry weather experienced during the past week has j affected business to a con tide, able extent; no sale-! of any consequence are coming under notice. Store Sheep —Odd lots of these continue to change hands. Good crossbred hoggets, also forward crossbred wethers :ind iuaidcn ewe.% are iv fair demand, and sell at full prices ; mixed sorts are also saleable, but at prices more in favour of buyeis. Wool.— The tone of the market at Home seems to afford a little ruoie encouragement, the tendency being lowards tome improvement iv values. The opening ot the fourth series of wool Hales in London on Tuesday next, the 2nd July, is now looked forward to with considerable interest. There is ho business of importance being done in the local market. Any little lots offering, however, aic fairly well competed for, realising prices quite in sympathy viith those lately obtaining for similar quality at Home. Sheepskin?.— Tho usual weekly sales on Tuesday, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, were well attendtd. Average catalogues ! were presented, comprising the usual assortment, and under very good competition the , whole were cleared at prires .showing but little ! difference compared with those obtaining during j the last fortnight, licod p'eked lines of green \ crossbred skins suitable for mats nnd other special , purposes were keenly competed for, and so were all good woolled. Dry cn-rsbreda and merino skin?, short-woollcd sorts, are neglected. Country dry crossbredo, inferior to medium, brought ]s 3d to 2s 2d ;do do merino, Is Id to Is 4d ; medium . to good crossbred?, 2s 3d to ?s 8d ; heavy do, I 3s to 3s lOd ; extra do, 4s to 4s 8d ; good to best l merino, Is (id to 2j Od ; heavy do, 2s 8d to 3s 8d ; " diy pelte. Id toßd ; green ciossbreds, good to best, 2h Ud to 2s 9d ; extra heavy do, and for special pur- „ pose.-., 3s to 3* 6d ; medium, 2i 3d to 2s sd ; green ' lambskius, Is 10J to 2n 81 each. s liibbitskins —A moderately fair demand is ex- j perietced, Vut owing to the depressed tone of the market at 11.-me pi ices obtaining now in the locil ! T are eminently unsntisfac'ory. Home manufac- , turers being now able to purchase the best skins at such low prices in quantities sulKcient for their requirements, iufeiior and medium skins are neglected ; consequently sales effected of such are at lower prices than ever. Quotations this week are : For best winter grey, 9Jd to lOJd ; extra prime, on occasions, lid ; best autumn, 7d to 8d ; i medium, 6d to 6Jd ; summer, 3d to 4id : suckem i and inferior, Id to IJd j bfst winter black and fawn, 9d to 10d ; medium do, 7d to 8d j inferior, 3d to Od per IU

Hides.- No change to note, Inferior and light fetching Id to IJd ; light to medium, IJd to 2Jd ; heavy, 2sd to 3d ; extra do (well saved), 3Jd to 3Jd per lb. Tallow and Fat.— Business is somewhat quiet, coniinod to the disposal of oddments from the couttry. Quotations : For prime rendered ten, 17s 3d to 18s 6d ; medium to good, Ms6d to lUs (33 ; inferior to medium, lCs to 13s ; rough fat— best mutton caiil, lls 6.1 to 12s ; medium to good, 10s Gd to lls ; inferior to medium, 9s to lQs per cwt (ex store). Grain.— Wheat : Business in the local market has lately assumed a more settled aspect. Buyer;, though free to purchase all lots offering, and on! the spot, are not displaying a great deal of anxiety to secure any outside lots in tho meantime, b-\t the idea prevails that further on as improvement in the demand is almost certain to set in. It i 3 reported that it is probable that the English wheat crop will be one of the smallest oa record, and that the same remarks apply to other centres, and at present the only reason for present low prices at Mark Lane is the enormous ship' ments to hand during the laßt two months, but that there is every reason to expect an early recovery ; consequently prices in the local market are likely to remain firm, which we repeat, say— for prime milling, 3s 8a to 3s 9d ; extra do, and fit for seed, 4s to 4s 3d ; medium to good, 3s 7d to 3s 8d ; inferior and broken to medium, 3s to 3b Gd (ex stor«», sacks weighed iD, terms). Oats : Buyers at the auction sales on Monday were not quite co eager to operate as ou the previous week ; nevertheless, a very fair demand wub experienced, and a considerable number of lots were disposed of at prices nearly up to those obtaining last week. The catalogues submitted were more numerous and somewhat lengthy, which may have had something. to do with the apparent decline on this occasion ; but, considering that there are hardly any coming forward and so \ cry few in store, present prices ought not t6 recede. Quotations : For prime milling, Is 8d to 1« 9Jd ; prime short stout feed, Is 7id to Is BJd; medium to good, Is Gd to Is ?d; inferior to medium. Is 4Jd to 1b 5Jd (ex store, sacks extra, net). Barley : Market remains quiet, only a very limited busineES passing, medium being Etill difficult to move. Quotations : For prime malting, 2s Gd to 2s 9d— extra do a shade more; medium to good, 2s 3d to 2u 6d ; inferior to medium, Is 9d to 2s (ex store, sacks extra, net). Grass Seeds.— A quiet business is passing in both rjegmss and cocksfoot, prices remaining very linn— indeed slightly hardening for tho latter. Quotations : For best dressed ryegras? seed, 3s 9d-to j 4s 3d ; extra prime, 4s Gd ; mediuir to good, 3s 3fl to 3s Gd (ex store, suck 6 extra, net). Cccksfoot, best dressed, 4\A to 4Jd ; extra prime do, 5d to s£d ; undressed, 3d to 4d per lb (ex ttora, sacks extra, not.) Potatoes. — The market this week i 3 loss firm, buyers declining to operate at up to las>t week's top price, best Detwents only fetching 423 G.i to 47s (id ; medium, 35s to 40s : kidneys, slow sale, 37s G 1 to 47s Gd per ton (ex 6tore, sacks weighed ! in, net). i Chair I.—There1 .— There being a fuller supply to hand this weak last week's top price could be secured for pnly tsvo trucks. All tho rest offered could not be placed except at lower prices. Quotations: Fcr best, 60s to 655 ; extra prime, 67s Gd to 70s ; medium to good, 45s to 555 ; oaten straw chaff, 35a to 40j per ton (ex truck, stcks extra or returned, net). Dairy Produce.— A very fair demand exists for good butter, and the price linn, prime salt buttor, dairy-mMC, fetching 7£d to 8d ; medium to good, 4d to Bju ; North Island factory-mado, 9d to lid ; local factory, Is to Is Id per lb. Cheese is not meeting with the same demand. Factory-made cheese, medium size, is held for 4Jd to 4%d ; loat shape, 4Jd to Sd ; dairy-made, 2Jd to 3Jd per lb. Flax.— There is little or nothing doing in this line meantime. The price at Home still remains low, 'ffeiing no inducement to flax dressei'B. The market in consequence is quiet. Quotations : For medium to go .d, £13 10s to £14 10i ; inferiox to medium, £8 to £id 10a per ton (ex store).
