POLICE COURT CASE.

Horse-stealing. — A young man named Jameß Spence was charged with stealing a horae valued at £11, a saddle valued at £3, and a bridle valued at sb, at Deep Stream, the stolen articles being the property of Thomas Potter.— Chief Detective O'Connor stated that accused at one time worked for Mr Thomas Potter, at Ashdowu, Deep Stream, and leaving there on the 25th December last came to town and sttpped with his mother at South Dunedin. lie left his swag at Ashdown when he came away, and returned for it on the 10th of the present month, and aleo to look for work. He was seen on the station— Mr Potter being absent from home— by ono nf the employees. This employee 'aw him saddle a horse, and when spoken to said he was only going a little distance away with some washing This c uployee lent him an overcoat, and accu cd then left, and come to Dunedin on the 12th inst He gold the hor*e at Burnfciie saleyard^ for £i 12a <id, and was arrested on th» 13th inst. by Ylain-clothcs Constable Cooney. —Evidence having been given by Frederick Ivemay, Thomas Potter, Andrew M'Coll. and Constable Cooney, the aeouied was cautioned in the usual way, and slid he had nothiug to say.— He was committed lor trial, bail beinc allowed, himself in £50, and two sureties of £25 each.— The Bvnch mentioned that if the accused could not get bail another application could be made on his behalf.
