June 25.— 0n Monday, before Messrs J. E. Brown and Frederick AVayne, J.P.s, an assault case—Ellen Fanny Wilson v. Robert and Ellen Moore— was heard. Both parties were represent' d by counsel, and the case r^se out of f.imily squahbles, and though the proceedings scented to greatly interest the onlooker* in court the caoe Wft9 one that should never have been brought into it. Before it was concluded it was withdrawn on the suggestion of the bench. The parties, it m»y be mentioned, hailed from Milburn. Some genuine amusemeut was created by the succeeding case, in which oDe of our patriarchal identities, Mr John Pink, of Lovell's Flat, was charged by a stalwart young man, Robert Steiuson, with a r fault It appeared that a few days ago Steinson and other men were sent by their enaployer to cart away some grain from Pink's. To this the latter had d-cided objfic'ione, and to enforce them brought into requisition a hedge knife. It is said that the retreat was beat in double quick time, and the old gentleman hotly in pur»uit afforded a s ght which in somewhat of a rarity ia the peaceful neighbourhood of Lovell's Flat. Pink was bound over to keep the peace for one month. It is said, however that whilf he was at the court other men \v< re busy at the Flat on the Bhine errand on which Steinson and his companions met with their discomfiture. Presentation. —Mr J. A. Robertson, late teacher at Fairfax, who in a quiet and unobtrusive w.iy made himself a general favouritn with A large portion of the community, was on Friday presented by the pupils and piuvnts of Fairfax with a handsome field glass. On Sunday evening, at the Presbytcrhn manse, Milton, the Sunday school teachers met to bid farewell to the gentlejuan named, and the Roy.
