SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the board, was held on Tuesday, June 25. There were present— the Chief Commissioner (Mr G. W. Williams) and Messrs Cowan, Kinross and M Intyro. Mr A. C. Henderson, solicitor, appeared on behalf of James Paton, Seaward Bush, and stated that some time »go the board granted to Messrs M'Callum and Company a tramway Tight in Seaward Bueh on the understanding that it would be used in working certain Government bush. He bad been instructed that none of the push had been cut, all the cutting having been done on private property. The tramway was an obstruction and aunoyauce to the settler*, aud it was their wish that the right should be cancelled. It was the belief that it was the company'a intention when they applied for the right to cut the bush on private property, but knowing, if they made such an admission to the board, the application would not be granted, . they had stated they were going into Government pioperty. The tramway ran through the freeholds and leases in perpetuity of settlera.— lhe Chief Commissioner said he regretted that notice had not been given of the application, so that MrM. Lallum. could have been enabled to be preaent. James Selwood applied that a piece of land, about 8J acres, part of Mr Rogers's run, be cut off by the river. -The matter to remain in abeyance until Ihe run is dealt with. , ... , i- i. * The Chief Commissioner submitted a list of names of 19 tenants who were in arrears with, their rents, and it was decided to deal with each case according to its circumstances. Applications were granted as follows :-° on 2* plete purchases : George John Baxter, section 22, block VII. Waikawa; William Tulloch, B ection 3. block V, Ountre Hill ; and Peter Larsen, section 024, Hokonni. Transfers : Section 21, block XX, Long wood, from James to R. G. I'rew ; kctioa 5, block VIII, Wendonside. Martin Silke to Mary Cody; sections 3) to 35, block XXI, Chatton, Charles 11. Gould to John Small. . Edward Davies applied to surrender section lib, Wairaki —Accepted. The ranger reported in connection with J. Kenzett'a application for the grazing ri^ht over 400 acres, part ef the forest reserve, Hillend, stating that there was no bush of commercial value on the land.— lt was decided that the ranger be instructed to report again on the grass springing A schedule showing in what direction the third 3 and fourths accruing were proposed to be expended by the Southland County Council was approved. " Applications for land were granted as follows— Occupation with right of purchase : Mary Ann Edwards, sections 98 to 100, block XXII, Invercargill Hundred ; Jules Richards and Vincenzo Almao, section 26, block XII, Invercargill Hundred; Herbert Mason, section 94, block XXII, Invercargill Hundred ; James J. Boyd, section 25, block XI, Campbelltown Hundred.
Mr John Cole Chappie is presenting a memorial to the Government praying tbat the present »ystem of dealing with the rabbit question, bo abolished and control handed over to the county councils, Government to contribute pound, for pound on all moneys collected.
