Mr Hookham has adjudicated on the unfinished games in the late telegraphic match between the Otago and Ashburton CheßS Clubs, and haß decided the final result of the match to be : — Obago won at seven boards and Ashburton at one. The game between Messrs Willis (Ashburton) and Grinsted (the Otago captain) and that between Messrs Owen (A.shburbon) and Warsaw (Otago) were given as drawD.

(fc) If P-Kt 4, 5 R-R 6, threatening R-K R 6, checkmate. (c) If K-R 4, 6 Kt-Q 3, discovered check, followed by Xt Q Xt 4. (d) If K-R 4, 7 Xt-Xt 4, followed by R-K It 6, mate. If White at his 3rd move play 3 B P x P, threatening R-K R 7, the correct reply is P-Kt 4 ; for if K-Kt 4 there would follow 4 Kt-K 4 eh, K-R 3 ; 5 P-Kt 5 eh, XR4 ; 6 R-K R7, mate ; and if in reply to 3R P x P Black plays P-B 6, then P-R 4, R x P eh ; 5 K-R 3 ; 6 P-R 5, B-Kt 8; 7 Xt-Xt 8, mate. The position is a very fine one and well worth study.
