Notes from Central Otago.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Mr Wiclcs has taken a new departure in mining at the old Crcesus mine. He has taken out the pumping engine and substituted a windmill, the pumps of which are not acting well, but I heir that the defect will be rectified. I trust innovation will be a success, but to have to depend on the caprice of the wind is not a pleasant thought. It locks somethin/ like sailing vessels competing with steamers. S^me very rich stone is at present being taken from v the surface. Holden is still on very gsod stone.' Several parties are taking surface stone from some of the old claims and seem to make a living.

The Bonanza are driving on the reef. The stone is very thin— 2in or 3in —but it is very rich. They had a nice little cake for Christmas. The ground is very heavy, requiring Bin or 9in props of manuka.

This has been a splendid year for water, and those with good sluicing ground have done well.
