Notes from Wakatipu.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Arrow, January 20.— Very welcome rain fell on Thursday night, which coming just at a time when the water supply was beginning to fall off sensibly is a perfect godsend to all engaged in mining. Both sluicers and quartz mining companies will feel the benefit of the addition to their available motive power.
Last Saturday Sir John Eobertson, of Criffel Face, Cardrona, through Messrs O'Meara and Co., offered his half share in a valuable mining claim and even more valuable water right by public auction at Arrow. The property was knockud down to Mr E. Courtney at the handsome figure of £160. Some who know say that the water alone is worth more than that sum.
Messrs P. Barron and party, known as the Speculator Company, have started boring for the deep ground, but owing to the county boring machinery being in a very bad condition, they are but little headway. " Although harvesting operations have now begun there is still a goodly number of men out in all directions looking for " the gold that groweth in the earth." One of the most favoured spots seems to be New Chum Gully, where several parties have marked out claims and have started work.
