THE CHEVIOT ESTATE.
The Cheviot mansion and 5000 acres were sold on the 17th by Mr J. T. Matson. The property was purchased by Mr H. D. Bell, on behalf of Mrs Charles Campbell, for the upset price of £25,000.
The ballot for the 42 sections of land on the Cheviot estate was completed on the 17th. The greatest demand was for the first-class land, as many as 30 and 40 applications being received for some of the best sections.
The ballot was conducted by the Land Office officials, Mr Barron, the Under-secretary for Lands, was present f as also were Mr J. W. A. Marchant, Commissioner for Crown Lands ; and Mr {O'Hara Smith, Auditor of Land Revenue.
The following is the complete result of the ballot : —
The total half-yearly rent payable on the sections is £840 15s for the first-class land, and £631 for the pecond-class. This, therefore, gives an annual revenue of £2943 10s for 10,791 acres.
Section 16, block VIII, of first-class land in the Lowry Peaks survey district, 365 a 2r, may be applied for upon the usual terms. Section 14, block XVI, second-class land, 250 a 2r, also remains open, as well as section 12, block XVI , 423 a.
The area of land sold for cash on the Cheviot estate is npw 6365 acres, for which £33,608 have been received. The area leased is 27,312 acres. The capital' value of this is £142,809, and the yearly rental £7140. The area remaining for disposal is 46,237 acres.
Large quantities of wheat are being stored by the farmers all over South Australia in consequence of the low price prevailing.
