SENIOR CUP MATCHES. GRANGE V. OPOHO.
The return match between the Grange and Opoho clubs was commenced on Saturday on the Carisbrook ground in the presence of a large number of spectators. " Mac" had prepared a splendid wicket, and ono that played very true all day. Croxford won the toss for Opoho, and the Grange went into tho field. Clark and White, the first represenbabives of Opoho, faced the bowling of Downes and Frith. Both commenced to bit out, Clark having a life in Friths second over, the ball hitting the wicket without dislodging the bail. The score mounted steadily until 47 was reached, when White skied one of Downes's, and it found- a safe resting place in Parker's hands. The outgoing batsman, who had hit oub in good style for his runs, was succeeded by M'Kenzie, who had not n long life, as, with seven runs added, Downes found his way to his wicket. With E. R. Boddington's advent Parker went on in place of Downes, and had to be treated with care. The score mounted steadily but Clarke was got rid of at 86 and Boddington followed shortly afterwards. The former played fine cricket for his 40 runs. Doig, shortly after his advent, returned one into Dawnes's hands, and retired iv favour of Goocb, who commenced to bat very carefully, allowing his partner, H. Boddington, to make all the tuns. With the score at 127, Frith gob the latter leg before, and in the nexb over secured both Gooch's and Crawford's wickets. Croxford 'knocked the bowling about while he was in, and Wells and M'Glashan kepb up their wickets until, with him, 157 was reached, when/ Frith proved too good for the latter. Croxford played a not-out innings for 20. Fribh and Downes bore tho brunt of the bowling for the Grange. After the usual interval, Downes and Baker commenced for the Grange, Wells and M'Glashan being the opposing bowlers. Off M'Glashan's third ball Baker returned a hot one to the bowler, which was accepted. Parker commenced steadily ; and Downes, playing in his usual free style, compelled a double change of bowlers, Doig relieving M'Glashan and Clark supplanting Wells. The change proved a good one, as with the score at 40 Clark found his way to Parker's wickets, the batsman getting 11. Best did nob last long, as Clark gob the best of him with a yorker. Johnston stayed long enough with Downes to be beaten with the last ball of the day, the score standing at 47 for four wickets. Downei out of that has scored 30, nob out. This match was commenced on the Cale* donian ground on Saturday afternoon. The Dunedin captain winning the toss elected to bat, Aitksii and Skitch going in, Lawton and Sykes taking up the bowling. Both being in good form with the ball, the first eighb Dunedin wickets ,foll for a very small score, bub three of the last men— Low (14), Best (11), and Philp (not oub, 9)— made a stand, the innings closing for 50 runs. Carisbrook B started their innings with Lawton and Cato to the bowling of Philp and Kinvig, but with the exception of Lawbon (14), Rose (11), Harraway (11), and M'Gill (10), who all battdd well for their runs, poor scoring was the order of the day, the innings closing for 62, only 12 ahead of Dunedin. Dunedin went in for their second innings at 5.30 p.m., and at the call of time had lost four wickets for 50 runs, Skitch making 19 and M'Kinlay and Best being both not out with 19 and 5 respectively.
The fielding on both sides was up to the average. Fenwick, Low, and Lawton made good catches, and Sbubbs ab the wickets, for Dunedin, was very good, stamping two men in fine style. Messrs West and Cooper umpired, and their decisions gave satisfaction. This match is to be continued on tho same ground on Saturday nexb, and; given a fine day, the finish should be both close and exciting. The following are the scores :—: — Dunedin.— First Innings.
