STRANGE CONDUCT.

Giseorne, December 12,
A girl, 17 years old, named Maud Hartnell, was landed here on Saturday from the steamer Talune, having gone on board the vessel at Auckland without money to pay her fare. A gentleman took xrity on her and took her home, but she wandered away and subsequently was found begging food. Another parson befriended the girl, but this morning she waa discovered attempting to do away with herself by eating match heads. The girl was given into custody, and the police have charge of her pending inquiries as to her parents, who, she says, reside a*i Chriatchurcb.

The girl Il.irtneH, arrested at Gisborne, belongs to the Paruell Industrial fc'chool, from which institution, ib is alleged, shu absconded on the 27th ulfc. Information was given to the police, with the result that the girl was found and taken back to the school pu Thu raday evening last. She was miasing again next morning. It is evident she boarded the steamer Taluoe, as that vessel left for Gisborae the same day. The girl is only 14 !, years of age.
