NOTES BY AMATEUR.

Owing to the execrable weather in Dunedin on Saturday the Dunediu Amateur Athletic Club's sports had to be postponed until next Saturday, the 16th insb. This was. a very unfortunate occurrence, as great preparations were made by the committee for bhe successful canying oub of the meeting, and the only thing required was a fine day lo have made the gathering the most successful one ycb held. Moir, of Chmtchurch, has decided to delay his departure for home, and will compete on Saturday. I have nob heard whether Goldie, who entered under the Wellington Club, arrived in Dunedin or not, nor do I kuow if he will be here next Saturday. Clarke, of Palmersbon, who was bo have competed in the cycling race?, had his trip down from Palmerston for nobhing. He returned home the same afternoon. The week's delay of bhe sports will be of advantage to the majoriby of bhe compebitors. They were all pretty well backward in their training, and a week's fine weather should pub them about right in this respscb. My anbicipabions as bo the results of tb.9 sports appeared in Saturday morning's Times, and as I have no cause so far to change my opinions I publish the tips in this column as they appeared in the Times :—: — Boys' Race.— This should prove a close race between Falkiner, Rice, and Young in that order. Putting 16lb Shot.— Moir 1, Doull 2 120vds Maiden.— There are three heat 3 for this event, and iiushel, Mackay, O. Esquilant, M'Millan, M'Donald, aDd Moore will piobably qualify for the final. Mackay should win the final, with E-squilant second, and Moore third. One-mile Walk.— Fmdlay 1, Orbell 2, Galloway 3. Long Jump.— Moir 1, Pram 2. Half-mile.— W. A. Low 1, Bennett 2, Shand 3. It is whispered about that Low intends to have a cut at the New Zealand record (2min) in this event. He will probably fail in the attempt, but I expect to see 2min 2sec broken. 100 yds Flat. — This event is to be run in three heats. Those likely to qualify for the final aie Crane, Mackay, Morton, Esquilant, Paterson, and Moore, and the final should result : Crane 1, Esquilant 2, Mackay 3. Pole Jump. — Smeaton 1, Pram 2. One-mile Flat.— E J. Mirams 1, Bennett 2, Shand 3. 250 yds Flat. — Those likely to qualify for the final are : Crane, E. L. Macassey, Sanderson, Hay, Paterson, Bushell. The final may result : Macas>sev 1, Crane 2, Bushell 3, Two-mile Walk.— Galloway 1, Orbell 2, Findlay 3. High Jump.— Tapley 1, Moir 2. Three Miles.— Bauchop 1, Smith 2, Mirams 3. 120 yds Hurdlks.— Moir 1, Smcutou 2, Macassey 3. L\Dir.s' Bhacklei', 410ids.~ W. E3quilant ], C. Esquilant 2, Hughes 3. Steeplechase.— Bauchop 1, E. L. Macassey 2, Smith 3. The team to represent Auckland at the Autumn Athletic Championship meeting, to be held ab Dunedin in February next, will be selected from T. O'Connor, F. E. N. Gaudio, A. F. Burbon, J. B. Beere. F. Uphill, W. H. Martin, J. Roberts, and J. H. Buchanan, These have been requested to go into training. Batger, bhe well-known hurdler, is at present in Wellingbon. Mr P. Shappere, who is cne of the official starbers of the Victorian Athletic Association, is at presenb on a visib bo Christchurch. "Ped" (New Zealand Mail), in criticising time-taking, says :—": — " My opinion is that there is not a man in New Zealand who could, on a grass track, break lOsec for 100/ d?, 53sec for 440 yds, 2min 2sec for half-mile, and 4min 40seo for a mile, even though ib is a common thing to hear of men who are recognised as only secondraters doing such fasb times. No one, ib is generally admibbed, can speak of anybhing so assuredly as bhose who have had practical experience, and the writer hi'-ving had that feels that he is competent to express an opinion." A Wellington telegram of the 6th inst. says that four of the Championship events in connection with the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club were decided on the Basin Reserve on the previous cveniDg. About 600 were preseub. The grass brack was heavy, owing to bhe reecnb rain. The results were as follow :—: — 250 yds Flvt.— W. Wynyard 1, A. M. Stewart 2, L. Ilarley 3. Won by six i ards. Time, 2O."sec. 410 yds Hurdles — F. Pownall 1, 11. Gore 2, G. Johnston 3. Pownall led from start to finish, and won easily by three yards. Time, 66 3-ssec. Tiikee-mile Fiat.— U. I"). Morpeth 1, O. V. 7 . Palmer 2. 6. S. Hill and 11. Lawlor also started, but the labter gave up at the end of three quarters of a mile. Morpeth made the pace from the fall of the Hag, aud finished the first mile in smin Sdec, with Palmer 50 yards away, and Hill 30 yards behind Palmer. Hill gave up shortly after this. Morpeth continued to increase his lead, and when two miles were left behind in lOmin 57sec he was nearly 400 yards in front of Palmer. t Morpeth, continuing to run in grand style, won by 600 yards, and finished amid cheeis. Time, 15min 59sec. Morpeth beat the standard time for the colony by lsec. Considering the heavy stabe of the ground, it was a great performance IJali'-mile Flat.— A. M. Stewart 1, G N. Goldie 2, F. Harley 3. F. Pownall and H. G. Anderson also ran. Goldie led until 50 yards from the tape, when Stewart came with a wet sail and won by three yards. Tims, 2min HVsec. [In regard to Morpeth's bimft for bhe tbr<.e miles, ib is probably meanb that he beat tbe Wellington Club's standard by lsec. The championship standard for the distance is 15inin 30sec. — Amatkuk ]
