GOLF.
The members of the Dunedin Golf Club held their compebibion on Saburday afbernoon for bhe St. Andrew's cross presented by bhe presidenb, Mr Hutchison, M.H.R. Owing to the boisberous nabure of the weather the number of compebilors was smaller bhan whab was anbicipated, bub 15 members turned up to play. Mr E. Paterson was the winner with 97 strokes, Mr S. Mathiaon, a yom g and promising player, being second with 100. Mr R. Smith and Mr T. Mathi&on (another of the young players) tied for third place, and had to play three holes before any decision was made. The first two holes were done by both players in 4 and 7, the third hole beiug done in 4 and 5 respectively, thus placing Mr R. Smith third. The weather prevented lory scoring, and when one considers the very gusty wind and blinding showera of rain the scores wera really good. A dozen balls accompanied the cross, the second prize beuig a set of clubfi, and the third pr zea duzen balls. These were presented to the winners in tbe club house by the secretary (in bhe absence of the president), who referred to the v«ry satisfactory position the young members held in Ihe competition. Members are reminded thai the competition for Ihe captain's medal bakes placo on bhe first Saburday in January, and quarterly thereafter, until one of bhe members holds ib three timte, when it becomes his property.
