MORE RECORD BREAKING AT

INVERCARGILL

A Southland correspondent writes : — Our record breaker, Mr L. A. Bone, has been on the warpath again. On December Bhe left; town at 3.55 p.m. for Gore, and arrived there at 6.40 p m., doing the distance (40 miles) in 2hr 45min. or 37min better than his previous ride from Gore into town. He was favoured with a strong leading wind as far as Woodlands, at which point a heavy rain fell and continued until he reached Edendale, doing the 24 mileß in lhr 30min, and covering the remainder of the distance— viz ,18 miles— in lhr 15min. The time was taken in town by Messrs Martin and Jones, and on arrival at his destination byMr W. A M'Caw.

At a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Cyclists' Alliance held at Christchurch the delegates present represented Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton, Dunediu, Napier, and Auckland. Ib was stated that the Customs department had consented to a refund of the duties on the trophies won by the New Zealand Cyclists in Australia, but declined to remit the amount of the floe imposed for an evasion of the duty. Mr Waller was elected to represent the alliance at the Timaru Championship meeting. The number of fatal accidents in the Alps this year has been larger than was ever known before. According to the Standard's Berlin correspondent, besides 15 deaths previously reported, some additional fatalities have just been made known. On the 9ch of October a terrible storm raged in the upper regions of the Bernese Oberland, rendering all communication between the elevated and the lower districts practically impossible. In one case a man who was going over the mountains with one or two friends, on foot, fell behind his companions, and has since been found frozen to death in the snow. In another case a Dane who, at the end of September, ascended the Saleve from Geneva, was not heard of again till some weeks later, when his corpse was also found in the snow. He had evidently been swept down the mountain side by an avalanche.

At a meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association the following men were selected to go into training in view of the Championship meeting to be held in Dunedin in February : — Messrs Hempton, Nathan, Lirkiu, Wynyard, L. Harley, Darcy, N. Gurr, Morpeth, M'Cormack, A. Gore, C. Gore, Batger, Stuart, Turnbull, Astall, R. Gray.

Mr Ernie Cavill, the champion swimmer of Australia, being at the present time in Dunedin, has arranged to give a display of fancy, ornamental, and speed swimming at the St. Clair batbs on Saturday next. In other parts of the colony swimming clubs have assisted him by preparing programmes of aquatic sports, but in the absence of such a club in Dunedin. last year's Tournament Committee, consistingof Dr Roberts, Messrs 6. Blyth, C. Cantrell, P. C. Corliss, James Fotheringbam, J. A. X.. Riedle, J. Isaao?, J. R. Thornton, R Campbell,. W. H. Melton, R. Phelan, F. C. "Crump, andi others, have taken in hand the management of a programme, including several open events,, entries for which will be received till Friday evening at the St. Clair baths, or by Mr Cavill's manager at the Shamrock Hotel.
