NEWS FROM TONGA.
Auckland, December 13.
Important changes were made in the Tongan Government on the 24-th November, when the King summarily dismissed Premier Tuakuaho, Mr A. M Campbell (collector of customs), and E Smart (a clerk) from their respective offices. Ib is alleged that Campbell was treated very shabbily, the keys of bis office being demanded without a moment's notice. Considerable excitement prevailed. Sateki, an important chief and firm triend of the Rev. Shirley Baker, was appointed Premier, and Mr William Campbell Collector of Customs. Mr Whitcombe has been appointed secretary to the Premier. A general wish is expressed that the Rev. S. Baker will return to Tonga. The excitement had subsided when the Upolu left.
The Rev. S. Baker, being interviewed here, said the change in the Tongan Ministry would be very popular with both Europeans and natives. He is of opinion that the country will be more prosperous.
