THE CHICAGO EXHIBITION.

(Pbb Pbess Association.) Washington, April 30. President Cleveland and the entire Cabinet, together with the foreign delegates, have assembed at Chicago to take part in the ceremony in connection with the opening of the World's Fair. May 1. Very few of the courts at the Chicago Exhibition will be ready before next month. Sixty divisions are completed, while 140 are still in course of construction. The New South Wales display is highly praised by the commissioners. A thief stole the ashes of Columbus from the Chicigo Exhibition and decamped with his booty, but the relic was eventually recovered by a watchman who pursued him. The Chicago Exhibition is to be opened, although some of the buildings are not yet completed. The delay is attributed to the numerous strikes which have taken place among the workmen. The British collection of pictures is a superb one. : May 2. The Chicago Exhibition was formally opened yesterday. President Cleveland made an eloquent speech, in which he referred in eulogistic terms to the stupendous achievement of American enterprise. At the conclusion of his remarks he pressed a button, which started the machinery, made the fountains play, and set the chimes ringing. At the same moment over 700 flags were unfurled, cannons boomed, and the enormous assemblage joined in the "Hallelujah Chorus." It was a magnificent transformation scene. The total expenditure on the exhibition buildings is put down at 200,000,000d01. In his speech President Cleveland said the strong representation of all the countries of the world at the exhibition exemplified in the noblest sense the fraternity of nations. He welcomed Europe to compete and view the industrial triumph of a vigorous race with a splendid fabric of popular government.
