CRICKET.

NOTES BY SLIP.

The Australian team of cricketers have arrived in excellent health. Lord Sheffield is arranging to extend them a splendid welcome, and is determined to return the hospitality shown to the team taken by him to Australia.

Blackham has been elected captain and Banner man deputy- captain of the Australian Eleven.

Lord Sheffield's team to meet the Australian cricketers is regarded by the Australians as almost an All-England Eleven. Abel is ill, and his place in Lord Sheffield's team will be taken by Maurice Read. Lord Hawke will not be able to captain the Yorkshire Cricket Eleven during the ensuing season, owing to absence in India. Shrewsbury has injured his hand, but hopes to be able to play with Lord Sheffield's team against the Aastralians. W. L. Murdoch is in splendid fettle, and will captain Sussex county this summer. He will not play with the Australians at all. Already there is talk of another Australian Eleven, and probably in the ordinary course of events an eleven will go in 1895. South Australia has never managed an eleven, but the chances are that one will have a chance in 1895. At the last meeting of the Cricketing Association the following motion was carried : — '* That the Australian Cricket Council be informed that this association intends to nomir ate for appointment a manager for the next Australian Eleven to visit England." It is understood (says " Point " in the Observer) that Mr Creswell will be the gentleman nominated, and an ideal manager he would make.
