The entry was a sihall one— only 21 horses. There was a fair attendance of farmers, dealers, and others, and most of the horses offered were disposed of. 1 here were also buyers present for cattle, but unfortunately there were none forward. There will now be a demand for suitable' stores, and we can recommend clients who have any ready for sale to send them forward. For horses suitable for farm work there was a good demand, and all those entered changedhands, and others could have been placed. For hacks, broken and unbroken, there was a fair demand, and we placed several at satisfactory E rices. Draught horses sold at L 8 10s to L2O, acks and light harness horses sold at L 7 to LlO Iss. Our next salo will be held on Tuesday, the 6th September, entries for which are now solicited.

Store Sheep.— The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) report the following private sales .—7OO cro-sbred hoggets at 1 4a i>d. 100 do ewes at Iss (5.1, 450 do hoggets at 13s 9<l, 400 at 13s, 620 forward-conditioned wethers at 15s 6d, 43 crossbred ewes at Us 6d, 200 halfbred ewes at lls; total Bales, 2513.

Sheepskins. — These continue to have a good demand, and all offered are readily taken up. On Tuesday, at the weekly auction, a full catalogue was submitted, comprising, as usual, both country dry skins and town butchers' green, 'lhc attendance, as of late, was very large, all the buyers in the trade being present, who competed fairly well all through the proceedings, but prices realised were barely up to last week's for green crossbreds; fine combing dry crossbred and merino had the usual good attention. Dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought 2s 2d to 4s ; do do merino, Is lid to 3s ; full-woolled crossbreds, 4s 4d to 6s ; do do merinos, 3s 3d to ss ; dry pelts, 4d to Is 8d ; butchers' green crossbreds — best 4s 6d to 4s 9d, medium to good 3s 6d to 4s sd ; green merinos— best 3s 3d to 3s Bd, light 2s 8d to 3s 2d each.

Rabbitskins. — The market for these is very steady ; apparently there is no change, prices this week being on a par with those ranging last week. An excellent demand exists, all coming forward being readily placed. The auction sales are regularly attended, and brisk competition is experienced for late secured skins, properly dried, and well furred, and free from stains. Other sorts are also in good request, and the supply evidently a long way short of requirements ; but, owing to the tone of the market at Home, buyers are not disposed to operate at prices over those now obtaining, and which leave but little margin, if any, taking other charges into consideration. On Tuesday The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) offered a lengthy catalogue to a full attendance of buyers, who each and all operated with a good deal of freedom. Prices obtained for winter grey does were Is 4d to Is 4]d ; bucks, Is 3d to Is 4d ; medium to good, Is Id to Is 2id ; autumn, 9d to lid ; summer, 6d to 8d ; suckers and half-grown, 3d to 5d ; black and fawn, 9d to Is per lb. Hides. — The market is unchanged ; a moderate demand exists ; and prices remain steady, at about equal to those obtaining during the past 12 months or more. The strongest demand is for heavy hides, ■few, of which are available ; while light sorts are" in over-supply. Quotations : For dry-salted Jioavy weights, in good condition, 2Jd t() 3d: medium, 2d to 2Jd ; light, lJd to ljd ; inferior, Id to l\i per lb. " Tallow.— there is little or no change to report, tl>e business of the past week being transacted on the basis of the previous one. A good demand is always experienced, all available lots being easily placed. We quote prime rendered mutton 19s to 20s ; medium to good, 16s to 18s fid ; inferior to medium, 13s to 15s. Rough fat : Best fresh caul, 12s 6d to 13s ; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s per cwt. Grain. — Wheat : While the market is not exceedingly active, a moderately fair demand continues to be experienced for best milling, hard and free from sprout. Millers are operating quietly, and, although their purchases are, not on an extensive scale, all offering in prime n condition is taken up at late current rates. There is but little really good quality milling wheat in the market, while medium and inferior is in very heavy supply, and, except at a considerable reduction in price, impossible to place. Advices from Home are not by any means encouraging, giving but small hope for any improvement at an early period in the lopal market. We repeat quotation!,— say, for } est milling velvet, red straw, and Tuscan, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; good to best. 3s 3d te 3s 6d ; medium, 2s 8d to 3s 2d ; whole fowls wheat, 2s 3d to 2s 6d ; inferior and broken, Is 9d to 2s (ex store, sacks weighed in, terms) Oats : There has been a steady inquiry during the week for bright feed and milling, and considerable parcels were disposed of. Shippers are the principal operators, notwithstanding the fact that prices ruling at outside ports are not such as to iustify buyers in giving the prices now paid in the local market, Miller* are not buying to any exent, but the demand for local requirements otherwise is increasing Sellers are very linn ; the tendency of the market at present is upward. We quote best feed and milling, 2s to 2s Id ; occasional lots for seed, 2s 2d to 2s 3d ; medium to good, Is lOd to Is lljd ; inferior to medium, Js 5d to Is 9d ; good Danish and black, Is 9d to Is lid (ex store, sacks extra, net). Barley. — No business of any consequence passing in this. The demand at the moment for any description is not very keen, although, owing to the hardening tendency of the oat market, a little mpre demand is experienced for feed barley, but without any improvement in price. Quotations : For best malting, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; medium, 3s to 3s 3d ; feed and milling, 2s to 2s 10J (ex store, Backs extra, terms).

Grass Seeds. — A few lines of machine-dressed ryegrass seed are being placed, but the demand up'to the present has not been exceedingly britk, although no doubt later on a large business will be done. Quotations : For best dressed perennial, 3s fld to 4s ; extra prime, 4s 3d ; medium, 3s (id to 3s 9d (ex store). Cocksfoot seed for immediate sowing has only a moderate demand, and as yet moving off only in retail lots : best dressed at 3|d to 4jd, medium 3d to 3id per lb. Potatoes.— There is no change in the market for these. The supply continued a loug way in excess of requirements ; prices in consequence remain low, which are : For bebt Derwents, 25s to 30s ; medium to good, 17s 6d to 22i 6d per ton (baas in). Chaff. — The heavy supplies to hand lately have proved more than sufficient for pie : ent requirements, and the drop in price has only been partially recovered. Quotations for best screened heavy chaff, 42s 6d to 47s fid ; extra, prime, 50s to 52s Gd ; inferior to medium, 30s to 40s per ton.
