Settlement at Tautiiku and Tankupu. TO THE EDITOR.
Silt,— l would beg to draw attention of Iho ratepayers of theßatanui aud THiitukii^istiicts to the following extract from the report of thu meeting of the Glutha County Council held on July 29:— "The Under-sacretary for Cvowr Lands forwarded copy of an UrdcT'in-Council declaring all that portion of the road known atfthe Catlins-Waikawa kmil, which commence"! at tho eastern approach to the Makenzie bridge, near the town of Ratanui, and proceeds to the t-ea coast at Taukupu Bay, all the County of Clu,tha, to bo a county road.— Cr Brown explained that there wm no settlement in the district through which this road passed, that the road wm not icquircd, and he objected to any portion of the rovemie.s of the riling being expended upon it. He moved--'That the Government be informed that it te
quite Impossible for the council to do anything whatever with the road.'— Seconded by Cr Hay, and carried."
Now, Sir, the fact is, both sides of the road as far as Taukupu Bay are taken up, with the excepof four miles on the west side, which is at present under survey. There are also nine settlers up the Taukupu Valley, nearly all on their sections and making considerable improvements, and yet the road is not required. The County Council have also taken care to get rates out of us and then object to spend any money in the district. It reflects great credit on the Government to have spentso many thousands on a ro-»d "not required." Owing to freight, &c, stores cost us here one-third more, and in some cases double, Catlin's prices. — I am &c, G. J. Scott. Taukupu, August 12.
