For half the journey Emita continued to show' the way with a good lead from Meddler, Stirrup Cup and Arriere Pensee, but soon afterwards Meddler was stealing up by degrees, and having collared Emita at the distance, he then drew clear away and won easily by three lengths. Cannon) 3 Betting : 7 to 4 on Milford, 7 to 4 agst Bill of Portland, and 33 to 1 Encounter. Encounter, in the centre, made slow running for a quarter of a mile, when Milford pulled himself to the front, on the left, and the outsider soon afterwards dropped astern. At the corner of the plantation Bill of Portland closed, and, forcing the work down the hill, stretched Milford to such an extent that for a stride or two the verdict hung in the balance, but the favourite struggled on under high pressure and won a fine race by a neck ; a bad third. Inferno on the right and Medicis on the left, with Serpa Pinto in advance of the others, all of whom were well beaten a quarter of a mile from home. At the same time Inferno and Medicis began to draw out, and after a good race the favourite succumbed by half a length. Value of the stakes, LIOBO.
