SOUTHLAND NOTES.

(Fhom Our Own Cokrespondknt. ) Brennan has Billy and Caloro doing strong work at Gore, in preparation for the Southland Amateur Turf Club meeting on the 21st September, and the Gore Racing Club meeting on November 2nd. I bear Billy has been tri- d at the jumping business, but does not take to it kindly. Mr Mortimer, of Gore, brought a pair of trotting ponies down from Christchurch on Monday, and tells me that while there lie bought the trotting stallion Honesty. Honesty was imported from Victoria some five years ago, and is by an imported American trotter out of a thoroughbred mare. His colour is a dappled bay, and he stands 16ihds high. Messrs Taggart, Bacon, and others, who have seen some of his young stock, speak well of them, and say they think he is a horse which will suit our district well. Mr Dewar, secretary of the Gore Racing Club, kindly gave me the particulars of a draft programme for the Club's Spring meeting to be held on the 2nd November, and which is to' be sub•mitted for approval at a general meeting of the club to be held on Wednesday, the 2-Hh insfc. It includes ahtndle race, the usual big handicap, flying, and a thrce-inile tiot. Altogether, the value of the stakes given by the club that day will amount to upwards of LISO. I hear that Amulet, by Traducer, dam Charm, who once did good service on the turf forll. Mason, Mr Stead's present trainer, is to do stud duties this season in the Gore district. I was repeatedly asked when in Dunedin last week if anything had gone wrong with Patchwork, as he was not nominated for anj thing at the Otago Hunt Club meeting. Mr Carnegie Gardner told me to-day that the horse was never better in his life and is quite sound and well. I saw some of the j urn pen at Forbury last week, but there is not so handsome a horse amongst them as Patchwork. The Southland Racing Club have resolved to hold a two days' meeting in December. The programme will include, the Invercargill Guineas, SOfiOYB) (opfcfl).
