VARIETIES

There are so many good varieties of apples that it is not at all difficult to maintain a supply from July until the following June. The number of trees to be grown must necessarily be regulated by the demand and the space at command. The following is a list of the best dessert apples arranged in their order of ripening. Early Red Juueating is the first to ripen, followed by Red Astrachan, Mr Gladstone, Irish Peach, Kerry Pippin, Duchess of Oldenburgh. Lady Sudeley, Red , Quarrenden, Worcester Pearmain, Blenheim Orange, King of the Pippins, King Harry, Claygate Pearmain, Hubbard's Pearmain, 'Scarlet Nonpariel, Royal Russet, Court of Wick, Count Pendu Plat, Allen's Everlasting, \ Stunner Pippin, Duke of Devonshire, Old Nonpariel, Van Mons Reinette, and Baumanu'u Red Winter Reinette. If a sufficient number of trees are planted of these varieties and given a favourable season, a good supply can be kept up, suitable for the requirements of a large establishment.

But as the collection given above may appear too large for the requirements of many, I make

the following selection which will be ample to meet the demand of smaller establishments, Red Astrachan, Irish Peach, Duchess .of.. Oldenburgh, .Lady Sudeley, Worcester Pearmain, Cox's Orange Pippin, King of the Pippins, Scarlet Nonpariel, Count Pendu Plat, Stunner Pippin, and Van Mons Reinette. For cooking purposes wd have even more varieties to select from, and consequently there should be no difficulty in keeping up a good supply. The earliest varieties are Lord Sufneld, Lord Grosvenor, Hanks Codlin, Keswick Codlin. Golden Spur, and for mid-season, Cellini, Stirling Castle, Stone's New Hawthornden, The Queen, Golden Noble, Warner's King, Cox's Pomona, Ecklinville Seedling, Beauty of Kent, Frogmore Prolific, and Blenheim Orange. These in all ordinary cases will be sufficient until Christmas, and will then be followed by Dumelow's. Seedling, Lane's Prince Albert, Alfriston, Winter Hawthornden, Improved Northern Greening, Bramley's Seedling, York-shire-Greening, Hambledon's Deux Ans, Gloria Mundi,< Dutch Miguonne, and Grange's Pearmain. For the convenience of those who have not sufficient space to grow a largo collection I append a select list for culinary purposes : — Lord Suffield, Keswick Codlin, Stirling Castle, Ecklinville Seedling, New Hawthornden, Warner's King, Frogmore Prolific, Blenheim Orange, Dumelow's Seedling, Lane's Prince Albert, Improved Northern Greening, and Grange's Peannain.
