THE S.S. ELGINSHIRE.
Timaru, March 17,
The underwriters have decided to make one attempt to float the Elginshire as she stands, and will commence operations as soon as the weather clears. March 21. The sea is too rough for salvage work to-day. The tainted meat is being thrown overboard.
The vessel is unmoved. Several persons are here in connection with the tenders for the floating or dismantling, and an attempt is being made to raise a syndicate to undertake the work.
It is understood that Mr J. Mill's enterprise in purchasing the meat on board the vessel for LIOO is likely to return him something handsome. On Saturday evening the schooner Glencairn, which Mr Mill chartered, brought to Timaru 1400 carcas.es of mutton, which were discharged in^o trucks and taken to the freezing works. On Sunday morning she brought to Timaru another load of 2000, The Timaru Herald states that the mutton is in first-rate cpndit}qn. — the majority of the sheep being firm and hard, and but few soft. The gang of men threw overboard nearly all the carcases that were in the holds which contain water, but very little of the meat has drifted ashore. In No. 2 chamber, in which there is lift of water, most of the meat is Queensland beef, which will probably be jettisoned. Any tainted meat which is recovered will be railed to Burnside, where Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co. will turn it into manure.
