MISCELLANEOUS.

During two days Emmett and Hughes are reported to have taken 27000z of gold specimens from their mine at Hill End, New South Wales. . The Roxburgh correspondent of the Tuapek-a Tunes writpa j— " The altei>atlo,ns ta the Dunedin (Jqinpany's dredge are nearly- completed, and it is expected to be in working trim by next week. I hope • jt njay prove as successful (\s it ever has. beon. — The dredge which' was working on WOunn's beach for some time, is being brought tip the river to work some ground above Ettrick. This dredge is under the management of Mr Cecil M'Lay, who has served a good many years on the Dunedin Company's dredge, which is now in charge of his father, Mr G. MXay. I wish Mr Cecil M'Lay good luck in his management, and hope it may be equal to that of his father. — People here wonder why the company who bought the Commissioner's Flat plant don't further test the claim, seeing that oil the plant is on the ground. — Water for sluicing purposes is very scarce just now, the Roxburgh Amalgamated and United Hercules Co.'s being still idle owing to a scarcity of that important element. I expect also that the Hercules No. 1 will be knocked off this week. A •good fall of rain would be very acceptable to miners just now, and also to the owners of stock, as the grass is all shrivelled up." -The following items are from the Tuapeka

Times : — "We understand there are close on a dozen applicants for the position of manager of the No. 1 Hercules claim, Roxburgh. The appointment will not be made until the return of Sir Robert Stout, who is one of the directors, from the North Island. Mr W. White still continues in the position of manager.— Mr C. C. Rawlins, of the Island Block Gold Mining Company, has just taken his departure on a visit to London.— Mr F. Nicoll has resigned the management of the No. 2 Hercules, and leaves the claim on Saturday next. Than Mr Nicoll no better or more capable manager, nor one more solicitous in everything that concerned the interests of the company, could be found, and we are sure his retirement will cause regret among all connected with the claim. Mr W. Atkinson takes temporary charge, but it is not likely that very much will be done in the claim for some weeks to come owing to the scarcity of water." Messrs Gaieand party, of the Belle quartz mine, Waipori, cleaned up their battery on Thursday, after four weeks' crushing, the result being a cake of retorted gold valued at Lll2 17s. The manager of tho Roxburgh Amalgamated Mining and Sluicing Company reports for the week ending 12th instant as follows :— " There has not been any sluicing done since Saturday night, sth inst. That night the water being so short I had to shut dowu the elevator. During the week I have taken advantage of the lowness of the creek and put in the gauge box at the head of the race, according to Government instructions. When the timber anives for lining the race I shall lose no time in getting it on, so that I can take < advantage of the water when it comes. I consider timbering the race is just as cheap as caulking it. All hands ai-e idle except the caretaker of the race."

We understand that arrangements are in progress between tho companies interested for increasing the capacity of the Lake Onslow reservoir, so that to secure the storage of a supply of water which will admit of all interested working continuously. For some months past the water has not been conserved, owing to want of unanimity. Mr S. Goldsmith reports having received from Mr J. Burton, secretaiy to the Ettrick Drfklging Company, telegram as follows :— " Ettrick dredge washed up. Gold value L4l 17s (id. About six days' dredging."
