TINKERS DEEP LEAD.
The Dunstan Times reports that Mr D. Fogaity while recently in Tasmania often referred in glowing terms to the immense deposit of golden drift at Tinkers (now known as Matakanui), which so impressed speculators and investors that he was commissioned to return and take up a special claim, which he is now applying for in the name ot the Tasmanian Deep Lead Company. Before doing so he visited Ballarat, and, after hearing what he had to say, a syndicate was at once formed, and Mr Bruce, one of the number, was sent over to judge by inspection. Mr Bruce has accordingly spent some days in the district. He declines to commit himself, but expressed surprise at the extensive nature of the workings, and at the wonderfully tilted up mass of stuff he hod inspected. It was Mr Fogarty and his party who, nearly three years ago, discovered that the layer of dirt immediately underlying the upper layer of rich golden drift that had been sluiced away by the several companies at Tinkers, and by them taken to be the Maori bottom, was equally rich in the precious metal as that which originally overlaid it. A shaft was sunk to a depth of close on 300 ft, gold being found the whole depth, but through the great influx of water it had to be abandoned, the rock or main bottom not being reached. Beyond some fossicking nothing has been done since, except that its value was recognised by the owners of the Sugarpot Company, who purchased, or rather took, Fogarty's claim into theirs, giving them a sixth interest in- the united claims in exchange.
