FOOTBALL AT INVERCARGILL.

The football season was opened in Invorcargill on Wednesday, 16th, by the three clubs. There was a good muster of each, and the games were as interesting "as opening matches usually are. There are no new men here of any distinction, and I dpn't think there are any of last year's players missing. The Invercargill mustered about 20 men aside, mostly young players who require to learn more about the game than they at present know. That, of course, is the case with most_ young players, .and experience is only acquired through time. Their forward team is more solid than brilliant, and when in form (a state which they don't seem at all particular about being in) would be a credit to any club, but unless they get some new backs hehind them they will have to occupy a low position in the premiership list this season.

The Star and Pirates mustered about 15 and 20 men aside, and judgipg from the play they will be in about thp same form as last year. rivalry that exists between these two clubs is much as that which has, existed between the Alhambra and the Kaikorai for some years past, and the contests that have taken place between them have been hard and bitter. The public are looking forward for the usual thing this year, and I' don't think they will be disappointed. ,

I hear that the Alhambra team do not seem very anxious to visit Invercargill at Easter. A visit from that club is another treat that the Invercargill public are looking forward to, and I hope that they will see their way clear to come. — Crossbar.
