HAWKE'S BAY J. C. RACES.

First Day — March 17.

The weather did not favour the first day of the Jockey Club's Autumn " meeting. In the morning it was showery, but notwithstanding the attendance was large. The racing was splendid, the fields large, the starting good, and finishes close. The sum of L 6704 was put through the machines, an advance of L 1207 on last year. Results :—

AUTUMN HANDICAP, Of 7530v5 ; second horse to receive lOsovs from stakes. One mile. Mr D. M'Kinnon's b g Scot [Free, by Sterlingworth—Dainty Ariel mare, aged, 8.4 (Gall) t Mr Jas. Cretonne 7.4, Hakimana 7.2, Ranee Nuna 7.0, Merganser 7.3, Bay Bell 6.10, Patience 6.7 also started. Soon after the start Ranee Nuna and Merganser collided, losing so much ground as to be out of the race. Cretonne led with Scot Free and Dreamland close up, but the firstnamed soon fell back, and at the railway bend Dreamland and Scot Free were together in the lead, Kupenga on their quarters, Cretonne and Queen of Trumps close up. Entering the straight the leading pair were hard at it, and ran a desperate race all the way home, and the judge was unable to separate them at the finish, the verdict being a dead heat. Time, lmin 44 3-ssec. Dividend : Scot Free, L 6 8s ; Dreamland, L 3. _„ ... HURDLE RACK, Oi lOUsovs; second horse 15sovs. About two miles. Mr W. General Gordon 9.10, Viola II 9.6, Colonel 9. also ran.

Viola 11, who took the lead, lost her rider at the first jump, leaving Couranto at the head of the field. At the railway bend Waterbury caught Couranto, but the lastnamed was still going strongly, and seemed to have the race in hand. Hickey, however, sat down and drove Waterbury along, and a rattling finish resulted in a neck victory for Waterbury, with Hiamoe three lengths off third. Time, 4min Bsec. Dividend, L 5 16s.

hawke's bay cup, Of 400sovs ; second horse 50sovs, third 30sovs from the stakes. One mile and threequarters. Mr W. H. The Dreamer 7.2, Pearl Powder 7.0, Torpedo 6.12, Seraph 6.11, Maid of Lome 6.10 also started.

The large field was despatched to a beautiful start, moving off like a troop of cavalry. Torpedo was first to show in iront, with Retina, Thame, Krina, Seraph, and Crown Jewel all in a bunch, and Kotuku last. At the railway bend Retina took first position and led into the straight, with Thame second, Seraph and Krina together next, Maid of Lome at the head of the remainder of the field in a cluster. Passing the stand the order was still the same, but a few yards further on Thame came down, the field galloping over her. Rounding the turn to the back of the course The Dreamer ran into third place behind Retina and Seraph. Lochness at the same time began to creep up, and obtained fifth place. At the back Pani essayed a run, but failed, and Crown Jewel began to thread her way through. At the entrance to the straight Kotuku made a run, but immediately died away. Retina drew out a couple of lengths from The Dreamer and Lochness, but here Crown Jewel challenged, and coming with a well sustained run caught Retina at every stride, and beat her after a hard race by a bare halflength. Lochness was about two lengths away third, Dreamer fourth, and the others bunched together. Time, 3min 8 l-ssec. Dividend, Ll6. Winners of the Hawke's Bay Cup. Yr. Owner. Winner. A. Wt. Dividend, L 2 9s.

From a magnificent start Lochnagar cut out the running, Link and Musketeer next. The lastnamed assumed command for a time, all the rest being bunched, but when their heads were fairly for home it was seen that Link had taken first place, and holding her own all the way won with something in hand by a neck from Musketeer ; Kapua a fair third. Time, lmin 57sec. Dividend, L 4 9s.

This was another grand start. Whimsical first showed in front, and kept the lead to the railway bend, where she gave way to Silvermine, who was first into the straight, but here Nemoralis and Como both came fast, and the former, running very strongly, outstayed Silvermine, and won by two clear lengths, Como a length behind Silvermine. Time, lmin 56sec. Dividend, L2O Is.

This was another beautiful start, though Triton dwelt at the post and lost a lot of ground. Torpedo made the pace from the start, with Scot Free second, Wakawatea third, Whisper lying handy. They ran in this order for three furlongs, when Wakawatea easily displaced Torpedo in the straight. Both Whisper and Scot Free made their efforts, but Wakawatea drew away again and won easily by a length. Time, lmin 17 2-ssec. Dividend, L 2 4s.

Second Day — March 18,

The morning opened gloriously, though it was very hot, for the second day of the Jockey Club's autumn meeting, but shortly before 5 o'clock a drenching rain came on. The attendance was large. A feature of the meeting all through has been the magnificent starting of Mr Sam Powell, who elicited frequent cheers.
