RACES TIMED IN 1891. (London Sportsman.)

In giving below a list of races timed in 1891, we are not inclined to place great value upon the test in comparing the relative times of the winners over a given distance. As is well known, our figures do not hold a favourable position when compared with the records made in America or Australia, but the different conditions under which the races are there run have a great deal to do with the faster times made, and the "clocking" is in the hands of officials specially appointed for that business. However, if we cannot beat the times made abroad we have invariably beaten the best made by any visitor to this country. Take for instance the 2min 56sec of Iroquois in the Derby. This looks badly when put beside the 2min 43sec of Kettledrum, Blair Athol, Merry Hampton, and Ayrshire. Then for two miles Mons Meg, the best of the Australian horses ever sent to this country, last year occupied 3miu 41 l-ssee in winning the Queen's Vase, whilst Queen's Birthday won the Northumberland Plate, over the same distance, in 3min 38sec. The times made in France, too, are in front of anything here, and only last year Primrose won the French Oaks (oue itiile and a-half) in 2min 22 3-ssec, while the best on record for the Epsom Oaks is 2min 40 4-ssec, this standing to the credit of Memoir, who won in 1890. Sufficient has been said to show that the different conditions must account for the great disparity, and we shall leave the figures below to explain anything further, merely mentioning that Amphion, who has just gone to .the stud, now holds the record of having covered the Rowley Mile in the quickest time— viz., lmin 42 4-ssec. Previously Diophantus, the Two Thousand winner, and Galopin, who beat Stray Shot in a match in 1875, held the record with lmin 43scc. Details :
