LEFT THE COUNTRY.
Great surprise has been caused in Wellington by the news that Mr A. W. Brown left tha country suddenly. He had been mayor several times, and was generally supposed to be in a good financial position. lie went to Auckland some weeks ago, ostensibly on business, and letters have since been received from him at Sydney stating that he did not intend to return, and forwarding details of his property.' Stops are being taken to make him a bankrupt. In one letter he ascribes his smash to dabbling in politics, but this is not believed to be the real reason of his absconding. His family have been left with very little. At a meeting of Brown's creditors it was resolved to take steps to make him a bankrupt. The debtor forwarded from Sydney statements showing a surplus. It is believed that the estate will pay at loasfc 15s. In fact, Mr Brown was not necessarily bankrupt at all, unless some undiscovered claims arise
The Mokau Coal Company, of which Mr Brown was chairman, will go into liquidation.
It has been ascertained that the trust moneys placed in tho hands of A. W. Brown are perfectly safu. It is understood that them are certain claims pending in his estate respecting the Mokau Coal Company, and if these are pressed it will materially affect the schedules in his estates.
