ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A meeting of the council of the Acclimatisation Society, held on Friday afternoon, was attended by Messrs 3. P. Maitland (chairman), T. Brown, G. M. Marshall, R. Chisholm, P. F. Stoddart, W. S. Pillans, G. P. Clifford, D. Russell (secretary), and F. Deans (manager).
The Undersecretary wrote asking the society to fix the dates of opening and closing the season for shooting native game, and the dates for shooting imported game. Mr BuowMnoved— "That the shooting season for all native game be reduced to two months — April and May— in order to give some protection to the game, which i.s rapidly diminishing." Mr Pillans seconded the motion. Mr Stoddakt moved as an amendment—" That the season for shooting all native game except pigeons should be from the Ist April to the end of July, and that the season for pigeons be during the months of April and May." Mr llussku, seconded the amendment. The amendment was lost and the motion was carried. It wivb also resolved that the season fov shooting imported game— viz., quail and hares— be from Ist May to 31st July, and that the license for shooting stags be'L3; the season for shooting fallow deer to be from the 15th March to the 30th April, and for red deer from the 15th March to the 15th May, the number shot to be limited to three or four btngs. The license fee for shooting imported game was fixed at LI. The Marine department wrote that the Minister in charge considered it would be desirable and in the interests of the various societies to hold a conference at Oamaru early in March for the purpose of considering the advisability of amalgamating some of the acclimatisation societies in the South Island, and also to consider the following subjects :— Jurisdiction over rivers forming boundaries, dates of opening and closing fishing season, netting in lakes, netting in mouths of rivers, and any other subject of interest to the societies.— The president (Mr Maitland) and the vice-president (Mr A. C. Begg) were appointed to attend the conference. . It was also resolved—" That the attention of the public be directed to the necessity of taking out licenses to sell native game."
